Pissed off by a Maple Tree

It’s looking like fall outside. On August 11 — oh, that is so wrong!

photo courtesy of Creative Commons license CC0The drizzle has stopped, but the skies are like slate, and right outside my window the traitor maple has decided to turn one — just one — of its upper branches vivid shades of chartreuse and orange. It’s growing more lovely by the day.

And I hate it.

Not fall per se. Two months from now, fine! Sweater-clad walks through crackling leaves, spooky night skies, spicy foods, hot cider, mulled wine … sure. But right now? I’m not ready for fall! I’m not ready for them to have already clearanced out the school supplies. Not ready for the Halloween treat bags I spotted in the big-box store yesterday.

Perhaps it’s because I’m no longer working in a place where Christmas lasts ten months of the year. I’m starting to get my grasp of real seasons back again. Then Mother Nature pulls this.

Very funny, I don’t say. You know what I think? I think she’s flipping me off with that single brilliant branch.

And I think I need a cider. Or maybe a glass of wine.
